Ceramic and porcelain are versatile stunning clay tiles that can be a fashionable addition to any modern, classic, transitional or Spanish-style space. Porcelain tile is continuing to increase in popularity in residential and commercial areas while ceramic has been popular for centuries due to its rustic and cozy complexion. Although similar, ceramic and porcelain differ in production, cost, durability, and application.

Porcelain vs. Ceramic

Production-

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are made with clay and fired in a kiln. However, porcelain is made of more processed clay and is fired at higher temperatures. Ceramic is made mostly of clay and water and porcelain is made from a mixture of clay, feldspar, and sand. Feldspar and sand are what make porcelain the more sturdy option. New technology developed in Italy has allowed for the production of porcelain to be conducted at a much larger scale with slabs as big as five by ten feet.

With the creation of ink jet technology porcelain can now look like rare stones, such as marble and onyx, and even your favorite photo.

Durability and Applications-

While both are durable options, porcelain is denser and allows for less water to absorb. Ceramic can absorb more water and is not recommended in pool water lines. Because of this, ceramic is perfect for vertical applications such as shower walls, backsplashes and fireplaces. Porcelain can be used anywhere such as on floors, walls, and countertops and is commonly used in exterior spaces. Because of its durability, it is also a great alternative for wood flooring and laminate. Real wood flooring takes maintenance and can scratch but porcelain will last a lifetime.
